AIX System Administration I Course

Course Abstract: In this course, participants are invited to bring their current ideas and questions to the classroom for discussion. Case studies, lecture, group problem solving, and online laboratories will be used. Participants will be encouraged to enhance their skills utilizing the techniques presented through classroom problem solving and controlled online workshops.
Audience: This course is designed for System Administrators who are already familiar with the AIX Operating System, but desire more detailed and specialized information as listed below.
Duration: 5 days

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
> Configure and manage a typical AIX system in a standalone environment

System Administration Overview
System Management Tools (menus and commands)
The AIX File System (JFS structure and use)
Backup and Recovery (backup, restore, and others)
Disk Management (partitioning, performance, troubleshooting)
Managing Devices (hardware: terminals, printers, tape drives)
User Management (adding/removing, password control, security)
Korn/Bourne/C Shell Programming for System Administrators Note1
The Printing Subsystem (creating queues, managing print jobs)
System Accounting (process, disk space, and printer accounting)
Introduction to Performance Management (sar, iostat, and vmstat)
Problem Solving (error reports, strategies for detecting and correcting)
AIX Security (users, groups, setuid, access control lists) Note2
Customizing X Windows and Motif (Xdefaults, xdm, and the desktop) Note2
Managing Terminals (ASCII terminal logins, modem hookup, dial-up TCP/IP) Note2
Adding Your Own man Pages (primarily for software developers) Note2

Prerequisites:

Familiarity with AIX commands, directory structure, and the text editor. The largest value is obtained when the participant has been working as a system administrator for approximately 4 to 8 weeks.

Completion of certain labs is dependent upon appropriate access to the machine used for the workshops.
