iSeries Technical Orientation for Programmers Course

Course Abstract:

This class, with hands-on labs, introduces the IT programmer to OS/400, the iSeries Operating System. Disk and memory management, filing systems, Command Language (CL), and user interfaces are explained. OS/400 work management concepts are also discussed, explaining different types of work running on the iSeries, and the programming attributes that control them. OS/400’s relational database, UDB DB2, is introduced and its’ integration with OS/400 highlighted.

Audience:

This course is designed for IT programmers new to the iSeries (AS/400).

Duration: 2 days
Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
> Gain an understanding of the basic structures of OS/400
> Define how OS/400 manages work on the system
> Identify jobs and how CL programs control and override job characteristics
> Gain an understanding of OS/400 DB2 objects

Course Topics:

Integrated OS, memory and disk management
File systems
User interfaces
User profiles, job descriptions, all the different queues
System values, network attributes
Subsystems, classes
Interactive, group, batch, communication and prestart jobs are explained
Job structure and attributes
Physical and logical files
Libraries and collections

Prerequisites:

None, although this is a technical overview, intended for the IT analyst, administrator, operator, programmer; or those interested in understanding the basic OS/400 structures from a programmers perspective.
