Implementing ITIL in Large Global Organizations

Is the ITIL lifecycle designed to be a single instance only?  I was thinking later that large or international IT organizations might have trouble after they reach a certain size (language barriers, scheduling calls across time zones, amount of changes to review, etc.) Are there situations where a larger ITIL process is governing smaller ITIL lifecycles within IT?

Your thinking is correct.  Implementing ITIL in a large global organization is difficult, but has been done.  The best way to do this is to have global governance and local adaptations.  Sometimes there are local, legal or cultural requirements that require differentiation.  It's important to have the right people interfacing from each country.  These people understand the language and culture, and they are accountable for spreading the results from their interaction with the other countries to the rest of their country site.  When implementing ITIL, the large global organization must be open-minded and flexible when considering these challenges.
